How many graduate scholarships, research grants, and clinical achievement awards has the ASHFoundation given to date?
The ASHFoundation has awarded funding to more than 1,595 outstanding individuals in the field of communication sciences and disorders. This includes the New Century Scholars Program doctoral scholarships and research grant, Graduate Student Scholarships, Student Research Grants in Audiology and Early Childhood Language, New Investigator Research Grants, Clinical Research Grants, Speech Science Research Grants, Audiology Outcomes Grants, and Grant Writing Workshop Travel Stipends.
Who decides which applicants receive funding?
Funding guidelines are set and maintained by the Board of Trustees. A Program Committee, oversees the review process of applications.
Volunteer reviewers from throughout the profession are selected for their expertise in specific areas and take part in evaluating the applications. Once reviewers have finished their evaluations, a mathematical calculation is used to determine scoring and ranking, and this in turn determines who receives funding.
Final approval of reviewer recommendations are made by the ASHFoundation's Program Committee and Board of Trustees.
When does the application period begin?
The application period for each competition differs. Generally, information about all competitions is posted on the ASHFoundation's News section of the Web site between February and March of each year. By visiting the News section, you will find out the most up-to-date information about each competition's deadlines and you can download guidelines as they become available.
How can I get application guidelines?
You can visit ASHFoundation's News section for all of the available guidelines, deadline dates, and other important information. Guidelines are easily downloadable if you have Adobe Acrobat, and if you don't have this program, you can install it by visiting Adobe's Web site. New in 2009—applications for the New Investigator Research Grant and the Clinical Research Grant must be submitted online.
Can I apply for more than one scholarship, grant, or award at a time?
Yes, you can apply to as many funding programs as you wish, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria. However, you will only be given one award in a funding year.
Does my application have to be postmarked by the deadline date, or actually be in the ASHFoundation office by that date?
Your application must be in the ASHFoundation office by the deadline date, so please plan to get your application in the mail in plenty of time to meet that deadline.
When are recipients announced?
Recipients are announced in the fall of each year, and awards are disbursed in November of each year. Recipients are announced and recognized publicly for the first time at the ASHFoundation's annual Founders Breakfast, held in conjunction with the ASHA National Convention. Attendees include individual, organizational, and corporate donors and many well-known leaders in the field of communication sciences and disorders. It is always an exciting and moving event!
