Description
This position is responsible for effectively communicating the member-value proposition to ASHA Certified members in such a way that they understand and appreciate the value of their affiliation with the Association. The position is also responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of ASHA's membership and member recognition and benefits programs, and for the recruitment and retention of targeted member cohorts, such as under-represented ethnic minorities, audiologists, men, and ASHA Associates and International Affiliates. The director is responsible for the writing, design coordination, development, dissemination, and response tracking of information designed to demonstrate the value of ASHA affiliation to all constituents. The position also advises in the recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students into the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA). Finally, the director supervises activities related to member affinity benefit services and member operations. Reports directly to the Chief Staff Officer for Communications.Responsibilities
- Develop and implement programs that increase understanding of the services and resources ASHA offers to members and affiliates in a way that a) increases utilization of these resources and b) positively impacts member satisfaction.
- Develop and implement strategies to maximize the recruitment and retention of Associates, International Affiliates, and targeted member cohorts such as lapsed ASHA members and ethnic minorities. Produce effective recruitment and collateral materials employing data analysis, creativity, marketing, and communication and editing skills.
- Lead the cross functional team that is responsible for the annual dues-renewal process for the Association.
- Develop and direct the new member and affiliate welcome processes (including welcome brochures, e-mails, and kits).
- Maintain and enhance positive member and public relations through direct contact and intervention. Respond to requests for membership information and assistance. Fairly and consistently apply Board of Director guidelines related to the rights and benefits of all the member and non-member categories of affiliation.
- Act as consultant to state speech-language-hearing associations and the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association to assistant them in their recruitment and retention efforts.
- Develop annual work plans and manage administrative tasks, including budget development and maintenance, personnel management, specialized correspondence with members, and other communication responsibilities.
- Provide coaching to direct reports in the membership unit.
- Make sure that member views are accurately represented in all cross-functional teams that require a membership perspective.
Qualifications
Knowledge Typically Acquired Through
- Extensive communications strategy, planning, and implementation experience gained from managing and executing successful communications efforts
- In-depth knowledge of association membership marketing and chapter relation's techniques
- Individual must have a demonstrated ability to increase member satisfaction and increase membership by recruiting new and retaining current members in professional organizations
- At least five years experience in marketing and promotion, with a minimum of five years in association membership-related activities. Demonstrated ability in creative program development and implementation, budget development and management, volunteer committee support, and staff management
- Strong leadership skills, including ability to function effectively with all levels of staff, both independently and within a team environment
- Requires a bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, or related field or practical knowledge, skills, and abilities usually acquired through an undergraduate degree and a minimum of 6–8 years of related work experience
- 4 years experience in a related position (supervisory experience preferred)
- Background in speech-language pathology or audiology helpful
- CAE designation helpful
Scope and Depth of Technical Skills/Knowledge
- Excellent data management and analysis ability to determine effective outreach and to track and adjust initiatives for better response
- Specific computer skills include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and a general knowledge of data warehousing applications and reporting capabilities
Scope and Depth of Non-Technical Skills/Knowledge
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, including ability to make effective and persuasive presentations
- Ability to work well within teams; demonstrated ability to interact and establish rapport with executives and professionals
