Three Easy-to-Understand Types of Learning Experiences
With learning technologies emerging and changing every day, it's no longer meaningful to so discretely categories the type of course. To that end, the types of activities have been replaced by types of learning experiences which focuses on group experiences either live or distance learning, individual experiences with self-study products, and blended experiences that include elements of both group and individual learning experiences. Independent studies are the 4th type of learning experience but as before these courses are registered on the Independent Study Form.
Additionally, the types of activities did double duty, communicating delivery method and whether the course was open to the public and should be advertised on Course Search. Now, there's a separate question where you're asked whether or not you'd like the course offerings to be listed on Course Search.
How to Implement
This should make your job easier. For self-study courses where you used types of activities 12, 13, 31 or 32, now you'll code these as individual. If you conduct series where participants read or have individual assignments in addition to meeting with a group and in the past you've used types of activities 7 or 8, code these as blended. And courses where all the participants come together at the same time are coded as group.
Here is a full list of former codes and how they translate to the three types of learning experiences:
|Types of Courses
||Type of Learning
- Satellite television
- Journal group
- Grand rounds
- Short course
- Technical session
- Poster session
|Group: Synchronous, live event. Instruction requires the simultaneous participation of all student and instructors in real time. Learners interact with the learning materials and the instructor at a specific location and time.
- Correspondence course
- Programmed study
- Computer-assisted learning
- Journal or newsletter
|Individual: Asynchronous, learners choose their own instructional time frame and location and interact with the learning materials and instructor according to their own schedules. An Independent Study where the learner works with an Approved Provider to design a customized continuing education experience.
|This is a new category and there are no course types that correspond. An example would be a live webinar that has required reading/case study review for which the participant will earn credit for successfullycompleting prior to, during, or after the segment.
||Blended: Combines elements of both group and individual learning experiences. These may be distance learning/online as well as face-to-face/in person. These activities might have prerequisite reading, videotape/case study viewing that must be completed prior to, during, or after the face-to-face/in-person portion.
Here's the question on the Course and Offering Registration Form:
