Web/Telephone Seminars: Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ASHA Web/Telephone Seminar?

An ASHA Web/Telephone Seminar is a two-hour (or three-hour) program broadcast over the Web or by telephone. You can access the program from work or home, by yourself or with a group. We'll give you access to the presenters' handouts (available online) ahead of time so you can follow along easily. Speech pathologists and audiologists earn 0.2 or 0.3 ASHA CEUs, depending on the length of the program.

Do I need any special equipment?

For Web Seminars and Replays, you need a computer with Internet access and audio speakers.

To access a Seminar by telephone, a touch-tone speakerphone is all you need. (However, you need Internet access to download the instructions, handouts, and CE Participant Form.)

Do I have to take a test?

No test is required for ASHA Web/Telephone Seminars. Just fill out and return the CE Participant Form to claim your CEUs. (Although most states accept the Web/Telephone Replay format for their CE requirements, we recommend that you call your state to check before getting started.)

What's the difference between Web/Telephone Seminars and Web/Telephone Replays?

ASHA Web/Telephone Seminars come in two formats: Live and Replay.

Live Web/Telephone Seminars happen in real time-they occur at the time and date indicated for the seminar subject. The advantage of a live Web/Telephone Seminar is that participants have the opportunity to ask the presenters questions during the program. This personalizes the experience and allows for your particular questions, comments, and concerns to be addressed on the spot.

Web/Telephone Replays are verbatim recordings of live Web/Telephone Seminars. They are considered self-study programs. Web/Telephone Replays are available 24 hours a day for one year after the original broadcast. The advantage of Web/Telephone Replay is convenience. Day, evening, weekend...the Web/Telephone Replay option makes it easy to fit ASHA Professional Development programs into your busy schedule. Although most states accept the Web/Telephone Replay format for their CE requirements, we recommend that you call your state to check before getting started.

How do live Web/Telephone Seminars work?

  • When you register, you'll receive access via the Internet to an instruction packet that includes the presenters' handouts and a CEU form.
  • On the day of the seminar, reserve a quiet space to listen and participate. Check your handouts for instructions to access the program by Web or telephone. For Web access, a direct link is provided on the download page. Please access the program five minutes before it is scheduled to begin.
  • Follow the prompts and instructions during the seminar. Your instruction packet contains information on how to access technical assistance.
  • After the seminar ends, fill out your evaluation form and your ASHA CEU Participant Form and return them within 5 days. Your CEUs are automatically reported to the CE Registry.

When will I receive my Web/Telephone Seminar materials?

All handouts and CEU forms are distributed from the ASHA Web site. You can access this material by clicking on the link listed on your order confirmation, or going to our Web/Telephone Seminars page and clicking the "Log In" link next to the title. Handouts and instructions are typically available for download two weeks prior to the live broadcast date.

I'm interested in hosting a Web/Telephone Seminar for a group. How do I do that?

Hosting a group Web/Telephone Seminar is not only a good way to save money, it also advertises your services to the community and provides an great forum for you to network with your colleagues. You can choose to host a Web/Telephone Seminar or a Web/Telephone Replay...whatever works best for you.

A group registration entitles you to one Web or telephone connection to this program. Any number of people may listen and earn ASHA CEUs on that connection. The person who will act as site leader for the broadcast must register on behalf of the group. After registering, the site leader will be able to download seminar instructions, handouts, and CEU materials. The site leader needs to have, or create, a login to the ASHA Web site.

Register for your seminar – Register for the seminar of your choice and you'll receive access via the Internet to an instruction packet that includes the presenters' handouts and a CE Participant Form.

Invite your group members – Invite whoever you would like to participate in the program. This should be done at least 6 weeks ahead of the date of your hosted Seminar. Charge participants whatever you wish. Use your state association mailing list or purchase a mailing list of members and certificate holders in your area from ASHA (800-498-2071).

Prepare your handouts – Once you've registered for the seminar, you will receive access to an instruction packet that includes a master copy of the presenters' handouts, an agenda, evaluation forms, CEU forms, and faculty bios for you to copy and hand out to your attendees (you may also distribute the PDF files to your participants by e-mail and ask that they print them). All files are in Adobe PDF format. You have one-time-use permission to copy this material for the Web/Telephone Seminar only. If you have any difficulties opening the handouts, please download and install the most recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Set up your facility Select a room appropriate for the number of participants in your group. The room must be free from noise and distractions and should provide space for attendees to write. Arrange to use a computer with Internet access and speakers (for Web access), or a touch-tone speakerphone with amplification adequate for your group (for telephone access). It is highly recommended that you check the quality of your computer's speakers or speakerphone well in advance of the program. If you are hosting a large seminar in a large room, audioconferencing equipment will provide better sound and volume. One company ASHA recommends is AT Products (800-848-2205).

Listen to the seminar – Check your instruction packet for information on accessing the program. The person who will act as site leader for the broadcast must register on behalf of the group. Only the site leader will have access to program materials.

Send in your forms – Immediately following the Web/Telephone Seminar, the group leader should collect the completed evaluation forms and CEU Forms from all participants. The group leader should send all documents back to ASHA using the address provided on the completion form. Your group's CEUs are automatically reported to the CE Registry.
