CAA Accreditation Decisions

August 18, 2015

Below is a list of recent accreditation decisions made by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

CAA's accreditation is sought voluntarily by education programs that offer clinical doctoral degrees in audiology or master's degrees in speech-language pathology designed for graduates entering the professions. The CAA applies accreditation status classifications to each program that reflect CAA's evaluation of the extent to which an education program complies with the Standards for Accreditation. See Chapter X, "Eligibility and Program Development" in the Accreditation Handbook for accreditation status definitions.

Accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) are required to notify the public, regional accreditors, selected specialized recognized accreditors, state agencies responsible for post-secondary education, and the USDE of final accreditation decisions. Further, accrediting agencies recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) are required to publish the basis for all final accreditation decisions, including non-adverse accreditation actions (i.e., award or continue accreditation or place on probation). The CAA includes in this notice the standards cited and compliance level (i.e., partial compliance or non-compliance) and a link to the program's decision letter or Accreditation Action Report (AAR), as appropriate. No decision letter or AAR is provided in this notice for programs that CAA deemed to be in full compliance with all standards and therefore were not cited with partial or non-compliance in any areas.

Summary of Accreditation Actions

The CAA took the following actions at its meeting July 15–18, 2015. The decisions were based on the level of compliance with the current Standards for Accreditation of Graduate Education Programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology [PDF]. The standards address administrative structure and governance, faculty, academic and clinical curriculum, students, assessment, and program resources.

The programs, grouped by the type of decision made, are listed in alphabetical order by institution name.

The complete list of CAA-Accredited Graduate Education Programs [PDF] is updated regularly to reflect recent actions and accreditation statuses. For information about a specific education program, contact the director of the audiology or speech-language pathology program in care of the institution listed. Information about the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology can be obtained by contacting the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, Rockville, Maryland 20850.

Awarded Candidacy

Although compliance with all standards is not required at the time of award of candidacy, CAA's decision to award candidacy status is based on the program's and institution's demonstrated commitment and ability to implement the program fully and to comply with all Standards for Accreditation. Candidacy status may be held for no longer than 5 years. Programs are required to file annual progress reports to document continuing compliance with and development towards the accreditation standards throughout the candidacy cycle.

A program placed on probation is judged to be not in compliance with all accreditation standards, as indicated by clear evidence of circumstances that jeopardize the capability of the program to provide acceptable educational experiences for the students. A program also may be placed on probation because the program has not corrected deficiencies noted earlier by the CAA. A program placed on probation is considered accredited. A program may be placed on probation as a result of CAA's review of an annual report or application for continued accreditation; if the latter, a new accreditation cycle is initiated based on the end date of the previous accreditation cycle. A program is placed on probation for a period of one year, at which time the program must file a probation report. The CAA will maintain the Accreditation Action Report in the public notice for the duration of the probationary period, consistent with the Public Notice of Accreditation Actions policy (see Chapter XII, "Informing the Public" of the Accreditation Handbook). The probation date is included in the program listing.
