Speech-Language Pathology Practice Analysis and Curriculum Study
A practice analysis and curriculum study for the profession of speech-language pathology was conducted in 2009. The final report, "A Practice and Curriculum Analysis for the Profession of Speech-Language Pathology" has been published and is available for purchase from the ASHA online store.
The Council for Clinical Certification (CFCC) and the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) partnered with ASHA to develop and conduct this study, last completed in 1997. A Subject Matter Expert Panel, which included a broad representation of expertise and practice settings, was established to develop the survey. The survey underwent a pilot review and minor modifications were made to the instrument based on the feedback received. The survey was fielded in mid-June 2009 to a widespread audience representative of the profession of speech-language pathology. The final report was shared with the CAA and CFCC in March 2010. The CAA completed its initial review of the report, and will use the results of this curriculum study to determine if any revisions to the accreditation standards, specifically to Standard 3.0B Curriculum (Academic and Clinical Education) in Speech-Language Pathology, are warranted. One of the outcomes of the SLP analysis is to ensure that the scope and level of academic and clinical education is consistent with the current scope of practice for the profession.
The CAA extends its sincere gratitude to the over 1,500 speech-language pathologists who completed the web-based survey instrument. Respondents included clinical service providers, university faculty and instructors, academic program directors, administrators and supervisors of clinical programs, and special education teachers who provided input regarding the learning outcomes for graduates of CAA-accredited graduate programs in speech-language pathology.
