ASHA Named One of Greater Washington's Healthiest Employers

(Rockville, MD - September 20, 2013)

For the third straight year, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has been honored by the Washington Business Journal as one of the Greater Washington region's healthiest employers.

Since 2011, Washington Business Journal's Healthiest Employer awards program has recognized organizations that are committed to creating a healthy workplace.

ASHA was recognized in the 100–499 employees award category. The business publication presented the awards yesterday at the Greater Washington's Healthiest Employers Awards event and EXPO in Arlington, VA. ASHA is also profiled along with other winners in the September 20, 2013, issue of the Journal.

"We are delighted to once again receive this wonderful acknowledgment by the Washington Business Journal," Arlene A. Pietranton, PhD, CAE, chief executive officer of ASHA, says. "Employee health is important to ASHA, and we continually evaluate and develop opportunities that foster our staff's well-being. We know that a healthy workforce means a happier and more productive force and also one where there are cost savings for employee and employer alike."

The Journal works with Healthiest Employer, LLC, to evaluate DC area employers. To select the winners, Healthiest Employer uses an online assessment tool and measures wellness programming in six key categories: culture and leadership commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, communication and marketing, programming and interventions, and reporting and analysis.

ASHA's 250-plus employees enjoy a range of benefits supporting health and wellness at its green headquarters in Rockville, MD. These include an on-site gym and 3 hours of fitness classes that take place daily; one quarter of ASHA employees participate in at least one class weekly. Among the other benefits are monthly blood pressure and body fat/body mass index screenings, on-site flu shots, and various health campaigns, such as the 30-day Mediterranean Lifestyle Challenge that ASHA launched in 2013 to kick off the new year. Underpinning the development of all ASHA wellness programs is a Wellness Advisory Team, which the organization established in 2007.
