Gail J. Richard,
Vice President for Speech-Language Pathology Practice
Gail J. Richard, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a professor and chair of the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences at Eastern Illinois University. She has been on the faculty for 34 years, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as supervising diagnostic evaluations. Prior to joining the university faculty, Dr. Richard provided diagnostic and therapeutic services in the public schools through the Area Education Agency system in Iowa for 4 years. At the university, Dr. Richard served as the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative for 17 years, including a term on the NCAA Management Council.
Professional service includes the ASHA Legislative Council for 17 years, including leadership roles as the speaker of the council, Speech-Language-Hearing Assembly coordinator, and floor manager. She chaired the Committee on the Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in Auditory-Linguistic Processing Disorders and was named an ASHA Fellow in 2000. She also served in several leadership roles for the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ISHA), including as its president, and has been named a Fellow and received Honors from ISHA.
Dr. Richard received her PhD in communication sciences and disorders from Southern Illinois University– Carbondale and is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist with expertise in childhood language disorders, including autism spectrum disorders, auditory/language processing disorders, selective mutism, executive functions, and language-learning disorders. She averages 10 professional presentations a year and has numerous clinical and scholarly publications. Dr. Richard has received numerous teaching excellence awards, as well as Distinguished Alumnus Awards from Eastern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University–Carbondale.
