TBI in Children and Adolescents: Recognizing and Treating Cognitive-Communicative Behaviors That Affect Learning

Children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families face serious challenges that stem from cognitive-communicative problems, which affect classroom learning, behavior, and community participation. Learn how to adapt the curriculum – based on recognition of underlying processes that lead to certain behaviors – to maximize the performance of children ages 5–18 who have suffered a TBI.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • describe prevalence, incidence, and developmental challenges for learning in children with TBI
  • explain how underlying processes of cognitive-communication affect a child’s learning and behavior
  • outline procedures to assess and treat children transitioning to school and community
  • suggest methods for analyzing the communication environment and communication partners in the child’s life
