This Perspectives investigated speech pathology student clinicians’ preferences regarding the provision of feedback and documentation requirements. The findings from a Howard University study on the effectiveness of short-term international clinical practicum experiences were also examined. The potential of telesupervision to increase both the opportunity and access to clinical education was also discussed. In addition, the results from a study using smart watches to deliver bug-in-the-ear real-time feedback to student clinicians were also reported.

This Perspectives revealed the results of SIG 11 May 2016 survey and discussed the initiation of the application process and outlined the steps for Specialty Certification in Supervision. A qualitative study that explored the factors that constitute positive and negative supervisor-supervisee relationships was also discussed along with the differences in perceptions of supervision practices between novice and expert supervisors in the medical setting. The experiences and perceptions of both the mentoring SLP and the clinical fellow were explored. In addition, authors discussed the upcoming changes in supervision training requirements and how these changes may transform the fields of audiology and speech-language pathology.

This Perspectives discussed how supervisors may utilize students’ expectations and perceptions to target individual their needs and offer personalized guidance that maximizes growth in clinical skills. This part also differentiated the difference between supervision and mentorship, defined commonly used terminology and reviewed the key concepts in supervision and mentorship. It also provided the basic information necessary to effectively and successfully supervise student clinicians, discussed the value of all elements of feedback, described the transition from student clinician to independent practioner utilizing a systematic process, and discussed the importance of national certification and resources for speech-language pathology assistants.

This Perspectives discussed the selection and implementation of effective teaching methods for developing students’ critical thinking skills and the significance of tapping into students’ higher level cognitive and metacognitive abilities. The articles also examined the efficiency and acceptability of two features of clinical supervision, a fidelity checklist and three digital forms of supervisory feedback that were adapted in a community-based clinical practicum. Finally, the authors reviewed resources and provided strategies that may assist speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to support effective communication between health care providers and communication vulnerable patients.
