The first three articles of this Perspectives focused on skills involved in formulating and documenting the execution of a dysphagia plan of care. These topics will not only serve as a best practice update to practicing speech-language pathologists (SLPs), but will also be of significant value to students learning dysphagia best practice. Patrick Henley leads the discussion on the SLPs skills in utilizing both behavioral and physiological frameworks in the formulation and documentation of a dysphagia plan of care. Nancy Swigert elaborated on the professionalism and skill that clinicians must practice when documenting their sessions with patients so that their notes can provide justice to the excellent, high-quality of care that they strive to provide to their patients. Advocating for, addressing, and treating feeding and swallowing disorders in a school setting can be supported significantly by the approach clinicians take to document services provided. Emily Homer and Christine Faust described this viewpoint in the second article. Finally, Carly Barbon, Dr. Andrew Hope, and Dr. Catriona Steele kept us abreast of the most updated synopsis on the utilization of radiation therapy and its characteristics as it relates to the treatment of head and neck cancers and guided clinicians on how to best utilize this knowledge and understanding in managing dysphagia, specific to each patient.

Telepractice has the ability to remotely connect adults and children with communication disorders to a variety of resources. This Perspectives explored two intervention programs administered through telepractice. The featured authors described a protocol for providing training in metacognitive skills to adults with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), and compared the outcomes of an intensive telepractice speech-sound intervention to traditional onsite therapy for overcoming barriers to effective remote evaluations.

The articles focused on the published literature that discussed the current state of understanding of the impact of swallowing exercises in the following patient populations: post-stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, and head and neck cancers. Further, the evidence on the impact of swallowing therapy in the pediatric patient population is detailed as well. The first article, by Gary McCullough, explored the literature as it pertains to physiological impairments in swallowing disorders resulting from strokes. In the second article, Michelle Troche and Avinash Mishra discussed the literature’s findings as they relate to strength-based and skill-based dysphagia treatment and treatment strategies in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. The modern management of dysphagia in the head and neck cancer patient population is elaborated in the third article, written by Heather Starmer. In the fourth article, Memorie Gosa and Pamela Dodrill presented the process of effective diagnosis and management of oral-pharyngeal dysphagia in children. Lastly, Lori Morgan Burkhead comprehensively highlighted recent work in dysphagia rehabilitation utilizing the basic principles of exercise therapy as they relate to the interpretation of the content in the aforementioned four articles.
