2.0
The reimbursement landscape for SLP services continues to trend toward alternative payment models that focus on functional and meaningful outcomes rather than the quantity of services rendered. This webinar will help SLPs stay current on changes that affect coding, billing, and documentation. Participants will receive the latest coding and reimbursement updates that impact SLPs as well as tips on how to use Current Procedural Terminology (CPT codes), the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, and the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10). Health care payment systems, such as Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, Medicaid, and private health insurance, may differ among practice settings (e.g., acute care, skilled nursing care, outpatient). We will define and differentiate these payment systems and answer participants’ questions.

Ongoing changes in health care regulations are impacting how audiologists practice are reimbursed for their services. This course will explore the ways audiologists can ensure that they are appropriately reimbursed for the services they provide by connecting practical coding and reimbursement concepts to the emergence of pay-for-performance reimbursement models. Participants will also receive instruction on ICD-10 and CPT coding updates, coding conundrums, documentation to demonstrate skilled care, and review upcoming changes in quality reporting methods.

Differentiating apraxia of speech (AOS) from other acquired speech and language impairments is important clinically as it provides a framework for understanding the signs and symptoms of the disorder, which in turn influences which specific treatment method will be applied. However, diagnosis remains challenging since it hinges on expert-based judgment of speech features, with minimal guidance on the frequency, severity, or clustering of features required for positive diagnosis. This course provides a brief overview of the current diagnostic method and its limitations, followed by discussion and demonstration of effective objective and semi-automated speech measures for identifying acquired AOS in both stroke and progressive forms. Video case examples and demonstrations of these measures will be provided so that clinicians can immediately begin putting this knowledge into practice.

2.0
Acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) typically occurs alongside aphasia. Clinicians are often challenged with questions such as, “What should I work on first, and why/how?” and “How can I deliver intensive therapy in today’s healthcare system?” While there are a number of treatment approaches available for AOS, there are very few large-scale investigations of treatment efficacy to inform practice and limited studies that tackle the issues around intensity and concomitant disorders. This course summarizes the pros, cons, and similarities of impairment-based approaches to treatment for individuals with AOS plus aphasia. The outcomes from our latest Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences systematic review on treatment for AOS will be discussed along with more recent work. The course will provide demonstrations and detailed discussion of the rationale and procedures for those approaches with the strongest evidence to support clinical use, so that participants can immediately begin implementing these techniques in the clinic.
