Exposing Hidden Hearing Loss (On Demand Webinar)
Format(s): On Demand Webinar, On Demand Webinar (Group)
ASHA CEUs:
0.2
2.0
Noise exposure and aging are common causes of acquired sensorineural hearing loss, marked by damaged hair cells and evident in threshold audiograms. Recent studies have shown that well before overt hearing loss is apparent, a more insidious process frequently occurs, one that doesn’t kill hair cells, but instead permanently interrupts their communication with cochlear neurons. This cochlear synaptic loss can be dramatic, even in ears with normal threshold audiograms, where it has been called “hidden hearing loss.” This webinar will review hidden and overt effects of noise and aging on the ear and hearing, focusing on documented synaptopathic and neurodegenerative outcomes and predicted functional consequences, including speech-in noise difficulties, tinnitus, and hyperacusis.

A Sentence-Level Framework for Written Language Intervention (On Demand Webinar)
Format(s): On Demand Webinar, On Demand Webinar (Group)
ASHA CEUs:
0.2
2.0
This webinar will provide a framework for sentence-level instruction and intervention as an alternative to the more traditional, grammar-focused (or word-by-word) approach. A focus on the sentence level can be particularly useful for students of all ages with language disorders, whose difficulties with syntax acquisition and verbal working memory affect their abilities to express themselves in writing and comprehend what they read. The sentence-level framework is based on four key concepts about how sentences work. Each concept represents a “functional chunk” of language – a meaningful unit comprised of multiple words. We will define and anchor each concept using concrete language and visual imagery that aid students’ conceptual understanding. We also will illustrate how each concept can be taught using direct instruction followed by instruction in “real time” that draws naturally from curriculum-based materials.

Differentiating apraxia of speech (AOS) from other acquired speech and language impairments is important clinically as it provides a framework for understanding the signs and symptoms of the disorder, which in turn influences which specific treatment method will be applied. However, diagnosis remains challenging since it hinges on expert-based judgment of speech features, with minimal guidance on the frequency, severity, or clustering of features required for positive diagnosis. This course provides a brief overview of the current diagnostic method and its limitations, followed by discussion and demonstration of effective objective and semi-automated speech measures for identifying acquired AOS in both stroke and progressive forms. Video case examples and demonstrations of these measures will be provided so that clinicians can immediately begin putting this knowledge into practice.

Acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) typically occurs alongside aphasia. Clinicians are often challenged with questions such as, “What should I work on first, and why/how?” and “How can I deliver intensive therapy in today’s healthcare system?” While there are a number of treatment approaches available for AOS, there are very few large-scale investigations of treatment efficacy to inform practice and limited studies that tackle the issues around intensity and concomitant disorders. This course summarizes the pros, cons, and similarities of impairment-based approaches to treatment for individuals with AOS plus aphasia. The outcomes from our latest Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences systematic review on treatment for AOS will be discussed along with more recent work. The course will provide demonstrations and detailed discussion of the rationale and procedures for those approaches with the strongest evidence to support clinical use, so that participants can immediately begin implementing these techniques in the clinic.

Over the years, cochlear implant candidacy has changed dramatically. When devices were first introduced, only patients with little to no ability to recognize speech were considered. Advances in technology and evolving ideas about who can benefit from a cochlear implant have expanded the candidate pool, which now can include adults and children with greater preoperative residual hearing, nontraditional candidates (such as those with additional disabilities), and “off label” patients who do not meet the approved indications for the device but could benefit nonetheless (such as those with single sided deafness or asymmetrical, progressive hearing loss). This course explains the candidacy changes in greater detail and provides guidelines to help professionals determine if a referral to a cochlear implant center is appropriate for a particular patient. The webinar outlines the roles of audiologists and SLPs in making these recommendations and also discusses how to counsel patients regarding their possible candidacy for a cochlear implant.

The webinar will review hospital-to-school transition planning, how deficits may manifest within the school environment and affect academic performance, and interventions that may be necessary for successful re-entry into academic settings.
