Cognition in Older Adults

This course includes two recorded sessions from ASHA’s 2018 Health Care Connect conference, held in July in Baltimore, Maryland. These sessions provide a context for serving older adults affected by dementia and delirium. The first session discusses a holistic, person-centered care approach to dysphagia management to promote quality of life for people living with dementia, including involving family members, encouraging personal choice, and modifying the mealtime environment. The second session explores proven approaches to identification, treatment, and prevention of delirium in adult patients.

The two sessions are:

  • Person-Centered Dysphagia Management for People Living With Dementia, by Becky Khayum, MS, CCC-SLP (88 minutes)
  • Delirium: Importance, Prevention, Detection, and Treatment, by Karin Neufeld, MD, MPH (86 minutes)

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • use visual and graphic cueing aids to increase personal choice at mealtimes, increase recall of swallowing
  • compensatory strategies, and educate individuals with dementia and their family members about safe swallow recommendations
  • implement client and family care meetings to involve them in the decision-making process for modified foods and liquids
  • list three reasons that identification and prevention of delirium are important
  • outline three interventions for delirium and its prevention
