BHSM Stories: Mount Vernon City School District

Mount Vernon, New York

During May's 2013 Better Hearing and Speech Month the Mount Vernon City School District provided district staff with information regarding speech, language, and hearing via daily e-mails and distribution of literature (pamphlets, brochures, etc.) from ASHA and the National Institutes of Health. The SLPs at our middle school conducted a trivia contest for students. We presented them with a trivia item every other day and the student with the most correct responses (placed in our trivia box in the main office) received two lovely prizes. It was wonderful to see that the adults were as interested in the trivia as the students were.

In addition to those activities, I created a piece on Better Hearing and Speech Month to include in our monthly school newsletter (Dragon Tales).

Finally, we are ending the month with the annual tradition of providing hearing screenings to adults in the community at no cost.
