BHSM Stories: Gwinnett Medical Center

Lawrenceville, Georgia

Gwinnett Medical Center recognized Oral Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week May 8–14 during May is Better Hearing and Speech Month this year. The actor and throat cancer survivor, Michael Douglas, who is the spokesperson for the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance appeared recently on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "The View" to encourage community screenings.

The SLPs at Gwinnett Medical Center partnered with the Ear Nose and Throat Associates PC, and the Oral Head Neck Cancer Advocacy Foundation Inc. of Georgia on May 6, 2011, for the Gwinnett County Relay for Life. The team conducted 34 oral, head, and neck screenings at the 2-hour event after receiving over 100 e-mail and phone inquiries. The screenings were located in a subdivided tent with 2 ENTs and 3 SLPs. There were also 3 throat cancer survivors on site who spoke with many of the Relay for Life participants. Newspaper articles featuring the screening event appeared in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Weekly.
