Arlene A. Pietranton, PhD, CAE

Chief Executive Officer

Arlene A. Pietranton, PhD, CAE, is Chief Executive Officer of ASHA, the professional, scientific, and credentialing association for more than 204,000 audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists. ASHA's National Office of 300 staff, is located in Rockville, Maryland.

Arlene assumed the executive director duties in January 2004. Prior to that, she served as ASHA's Chief Staff Officer for Speech-Language Pathology (1996–2003), in which capacity she liaised with the ASHA National Office units responsible for Government Relations and Public Policy, Speech-Language Pathology Practices, and Special Interest Divisions. Arlene also served as ASHA Director of Health Services (1994–1996).

Before joining ASHA Arlene worked at the George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, DC, where she held several clinical and administrative positions, including Director of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Services, Director of Rehabilitation Services, and Administrative Director of the Neurological Institute.

Arlene received her BA in biology, MA in speech-language pathology, and PhD in psychology from the George Washington University.

An ASHA Fellow, Arlene has served as President of the District of Columbia Speech-Language-Hearing Association, a member of the ASHA Legislative Council, Chair of the ASHA Political Action Committee, and a member of various committees of state and national professional and civic organizations.

Arlene holds the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and is an ASAE Fellow and a past Chairperson of the ASAE Board of Directors. She has been recognized as: a 2015 Top Association & Non Profit Innovator; the 2015 Professional Society CEO of the Year by CEO Update; the 2018 Association Executive of the Year by Association Trends; and the 2018 ASAE Key Awardee. Arlene is currently: Vice Chair of the Board of the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives (CESSE); a Public Member of the Certified Financial Planner Board; and a Co-Chair of the Collective Impact initiative Montgomery Moving Forward.

Her interests include international history, cultures, and travel; reading; movies and theater; skiing; and entertaining family and friends. She resides in Washington, DC with her husband and two adult daughters.
