In May 2015, Joelle, a vibrant 20-year-old, was involved in a near-fatal car accident when her SUV struck the back of a truck. At the rehabilitation hospital, I remember the first day I met Joelle; she was upright in her wheelchair, with a plugged trach, helmet on, begging for water. We progressed all the way from ice chips to her favorite "mac 'n' cheese with hot dogs" meal! By coincidence, I moved jobs from the inpatient to outpatient setting within the same hospital. Her evaluation in July revealed severe deficits across cognitive domains. "Bean," as Joelle was nicknamed, and her extensive support team worked diligently to complete all carry-over tasks until discharge in March 2016. Recently, Joelle officially registered for the fall semester at a local college to finish her BA and will graduate in 2017! Her dream is to become a psychologist or counselor. Joelle's success inspires me every single day.
