Humans of ASHA: Caroline Usher

I was ordered to maintain complete vocal rest for sixteen days following the removal of vocal nodules, something that quickly proved to be difficult both physically and mentally. Communicating with others is an integral part of life; we communicate to build relationships and to spread love. I'll admit I struggled after just sixteen days, but this experience made me realize that many of our clients face obstacles communicating every single day. The field of speech, language, and hearing provides people with the powerful tools to communicate. Speaking the simple message, "I love you," was something I took for granted before my surgery. My experience as a patient opened my eyes to the amazing work of speech-language pathologists and the participating professionals that assist individuals in communicating once again, and it confirmed that with my new and improved voice, I will soon be working in a field that has already begun to change my life.
