Pre-Convention Workshops

Workshops offered for ASHA CEUs and sponsored by the California Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CSHA) or the American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders will be on Wednesday, November 8, 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Choose from one of the four workshops below and extend your learning at the ASHA Convention.

Tickets for the workshops may be purchased through registration. You may purchase tickets even if you do not plan to attend the Convention itself, however, you'll still need to complete the full Convention registration process. To do so, log into the registration system and select the "Wednesday Only" option for $0, which will allow you to add tickets for the Wednesday workshops. You will pay only for the workshop you select, and will not be registered for the ASHA Convention, which begins on Thursday.

PC01: IDDSI – The Next Steps: Tools & Tips for a Smooth Implementation
Topic Area: Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders
Presented by: Peter Lam, Julie Cichero, Catriona Steele, Luis Riquelme, Joseph Murray, Ben Hanson

This session developed by, and presenters invited by, the American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative was released in December 2015 to overwhelming international support, including a joint announcement in January 2017 from ASHA and the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Preparation for implementation has commenced. This practical workshop provides an interactive opportunity to use the IDDSI food and drink testing methods in practice. In addition, tips for implementation, the IDDSI Functional Diet Scale and risk management strategies will also be presented.

PC02: Expanding the View of Auditory Processing Disorders in Children: Considering the Whole Child

This session developed by, and presenters invited by the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA). In everyday listening settings such as in classrooms, one's ability to process spoken language is determined by a number of intertwined processes, each of which contributes to an individual’s ability to successfully process speech. In order to understand why a child may be experiencing difficulties in the auditory processing of spoken language, it is important to have a fundamental understanding of the various processes that are engaged and how they are intertwined.

PC03: Lights, Camera, Action: Literacy on Stage
Topic Area: Literacy Assessment and Intervention

This session developed by, and presenters invited by the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA). The "Big Picture" of Literacy in schools is far more than IEP goals and objectives! Speech-language pathologists operate their proverbial camera through different lenses: the lens of IDEA requirements and the evidence-base of child language research on literacy. This session will focus on student use of informational text in the classroom and the various ways that SLPs can support students to become readers and writers.

PC04: Neuroscience Update: Speech, Language & Literacy: Increasing Intervention Efficacy
Topic Area: Speech and Language Science

This session developed by, and presenters invited by the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA). This course will be a practical update of educational neuroscience for SLPs who work in pediatric settings and schools. The focus will be on application of the new research to assessment and treatment of students with neurodevelopmental speech and language disorders including childhood apraxia of speech, dyslexia, and auditory processing disorders. The course will begin with new research on brain development and maturation followed by an understanding of the neurological differences in children.
