Reinstatement of the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology

Reinstatement of the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) may be available to eligible individuals who are considered "not currently certified" after their ASHA certification has expired, or has been resigned, retired, or revoked.

Who is Eligible to Apply for Reinstatement of the CCC-SLP?

  • An individual whose ASHA certification expired after failing to comply with certification maintenance standards.
  • An individual who decides to return to practice after resigning their ASHA certification.
  • An individual who decides to return to practice after retiring their ASHA certification.
  • An individual whose ASHA certification was revoked by the Board of Ethics, but who has petitioned and received approval to reinstate from the Board of Ethics, as well as met all the Board's reinstatement conditions or requirements.

Reinstatement Policies and Procedures

Individuals seeking reinstatement of the CCC-SLP must:

  • Provide evidence of professional development activities that are within the Scope of Practice in Speech-Language Pathology. Eligible professional development hours (PDHs) are those that have been earned no more than 3 years prior to submitting the application for reinstatement;
    • If applying for reinstatement within 1 year of becoming "not currently certified," provide evidence of 10 PDHs earned no more than 12 months prior to application.
  • Provide confirmation of receipt of a passing score on the Praxis examination in Speech-Language Pathology via official notification from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) that was achieved no more than 5 years prior to application for reinstatement;
    • No passing Praxis score is required if you are applying for reinstatement within 1 year of becoming "not currently certified," as long as your application is submitted by March 31 of the following year (e.g., "not currently certified" date of 4/1/2019 = submission must be before 3/31/2020).
  • Submit a reinstatement application; and
  • Pay a reinstatement fee.

Reinstatement Application Instructions

Individuals seeking reinstatement of the CCC-SLP must complete and submit all of the following items:

  • Complete an online application by logging into your ASHA account.
  • Evidence of professional development activities based on the number of years you were not currently certified (i.e., 1 year=10 hours of professional development; 2 years=20 hours; 3 or more years=30 hours).
    • Paid CE Registry users (within the last 1–3 years) may not be required to provide additional evidence; however, documentation is required for hours other than ASHA CEUs.
    • List your professional development activities on your online application and include the (a) title of the course/activity, (b) name of sponsoring course provider, (c) date of completion, and (d) number of hours earned.
    • If applying for reinstatement within 1 year of becoming "not currently certified," provide evidence of 10 PDHs earned no more than 12 months prior to application.
  • Official notification from ETS of receipt of a passing Praxis Speech-Language Pathology exam score that was achieved no more than 5 years prior to application for reinstatement.
    • No passing Praxis score is required if you are applying for reinstatement within 1 year of becoming "not currently certified," as long as your application is submitted by March 31 of the following year.  
  • Reinstatement fee
    • $375 for CCC-SLP and ASHA membership
    • $349 for CCC-SLP without ASHA membership

Please do not apply until you can 1) meet all the policies and procedures for reinstatement and 2) submit all the required items above. Incomplete application materials will not be processed; applicants will be notified of the deficiency and given 60 days to complete and resubmit the appropriate application materials.

Refund policy: Applicants who are deemed ineligible for ASHA certification or who voluntarily withdraw their application for ASHA certification within 1 year of the initial application payment date will receive a refund of the initial application fee, less a $50 nonrefundable processing fee. The initial application fee will not be refunded according to the following criteria: (a) after the first dues/fees payment has been made or (b) after 1 year or more from the application payment date, whichever comes first. Applicants who have made a dues/fees renewal payment will receive a refund of only the most recent payment.

Professional Development for Reinstatement

  • Acceptable activities must have been completed no more than 3 years prior to submission of the reinstatement application form. If applying for reinstatement within 1 year of becoming "not currently certified," PDHs must have been earned no more than 12 months prior to application.
  • Courses and activities must relate to the Scope of Practice in Speech-Language Pathology.

Reinstatement Timeline

Please allow approximately 6 weeks for review of your completed online application and all required documentation. Certification will be reinstated only after we have verified that all reinstatement requirements have been met.

Maintenance of Certification

Once certification has been granted, all certificate holders must be aware that maintenance of certification is accomplished through abiding by the ASHA Code of Ethics, annual payment of ASHA dues and/or the annual certification fee, and accrual of 30 hours of professional development during each 3-year maintenance interval.
