National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) National Advisor
Sonja L. Pruitt-Lord, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an associate professor at San Diego State University in San Diego, California.
Dr. Pruitt-Lord’s research is in the areas of child language acquisition and disorders within the context of cultural and linguistic diversity. She has co-authored several scholarly articles, and presented at state, national, and international conferences. She has received research
funding from foundations and state and federal agencies. She served as associate editor of the Language, Speech, and
Hearing Services in the Schools and an editorial board member for the Journal of Speech,
Language, and Hearing Research.
Dr. Pruitt-Lord was elected as the national advisor for NSSLHA (2018–2019) and serves as the faculty advisor for her local NSSLHA Chapter. She has been recognized twice as the Outstanding Club Advisor by the College of Health Human Services Student Council for her commitment to student leadership
development. Dr. Pruitt-Lord’s dedication to service and teaching has been recognized with two Exceptional Service Awards and ten student-nominated teaching awards.
Dr. Pruitt-Lord was recognized for her leadership with the California Speech-Language Hearing Association District 9 Leadership Award (2015). She has been recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHA) with the Media Outreach Champion Award (2014) and has
participated in ASHA’s Clinical Practice Research Institute and Lessons for Success. She has mentored several students and junior faculty members through ASHA’s S.T.E.P., M.A.R.C., and Pathways programs.
Dr. Pruitt-Lord received a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders, minor in linguistics; a master of arts degree in communication sciences and disorders; and a PhD in communication sciences and disorders, minor in public policy, from Louisiana State University.
