Minority Student Leadership Program, Class of 2007

Forty Outstanding Students Chosen To Participate in the 2007 Class of the MSLP

This year marks the 9th annual Minority Student Leadership Program (MSLP) which will take place at the ASHA Convention November 15-17, 2007, in Boston, Massachusetts. The MSLP was established in 1999 to serve as a leadership development tool for racial/ethnic minority students enrolled in communication sciences and disorders.

This year's participants will gain insight into their own leadership skills and a better understanding of how leaders effect change in their professional association. In addition, they will become empowered to take risks and to meet their own challenges. This program offers many opportunities to explore ASHA and the professions. The students will participate in activities to increase their awareness of the Association, including observing Committees and Boards, and the Legislative Council. The students will also achieve perspective and access to association leadership through networking at the MSLP Leadership Simulation, the Multicultural Concerns Collective (MC2), and other Convention events.

In 2006, ASHA piloted a PhD track in response to ASHA's Focused Initiative on the PhD Shortage in Higher Education. In addition to 30 undergraduate and master's students, 10 doctoral students were added to the program. This opportunity further develops the leadership skills of potential teacher/researchers who will fill short-term and long-term faculty vacancies in human communication sciences and disorders.
