This obituary tribute to Herb Klinger was submitted by the speech-language pathology graduate class of 1974: Sue Goldman, Pat Klein Neuhaus, Judy Meyer, Barbara Solomon, and Bob Volin.
Dr. Herb Klinger, beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and devoted brother and uncle, respected teacher, and loyal friend passed away on March 3, 2009. Dr. Klinger received his bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College, MS from Pennsylvania State University and PhD from New York University. His patients remember him from the Manhattan Veterans Administration and his graduate students remember him as a professor at the City College of New York (CCNY). After retiring he dabbled in acting and received rave reviews.
As a professor, students recall his kind heart, open door policy, and friendly nature. He was a mentor to many and his students learned many lessons about life from him. He was the one professor his students recall time and time again. He cared about his students as people, not just as professionals in training. He was a truly positive force and he profoundly affected how many of his students teach and how they practice. To this day, his students carry forward his lessons on how to relate to clients and provide quality services to all individuals. Many of his students stayed in touch with him and five of them traveled to his funeral even though they graduated 35 years ago! He had a very significant impact on all of his students' lives.
At the funeral service, Dr. Klinger's devotion to his stuttering and voice patients was praised. The Rabbi eulogized the coincidence of Moses (who had a stuttering problem) being born on the same day that our colleague Dr. Klinger passed away, commenting that "he's probably up in heaven helping him now!"
Please join the 1974 graduate school class of CCNY while we celebrate the many lessons we learned from a deeply committed professor. In recognition of Dr. Klinger's mentorship to students, donations may be sent "in memory of Dr. Herb Klinger" to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, 2200 Research Boulevard, Rockville, MD 20850 to support its annual student scholarship program.
