American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and VoiceBox Radio Program Announce Better Hearing and Speech Month Partnership

(Rockville, MD - April 22, 2013)

The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and VoiceBox, a San Francisco-based public radio (91.7 KALW-FM) and podcast series dedicated to exploring the human voice, are pleased to announce a new programming partnership for May 2013.

In recognition of Better Hearing and Speech Month, ASHA will sponsor three health care-centered VoiceBox shows on April 26, May 10, and May 17 that will feature ASHA members as guests and provide information to listeners on the following topics:

  • Listening and how it relates to vocal health
  • The evolution of voice care
  • Voice care as a first-world phenomenon

The May programming will extend a 3-year ASHA and VoiceBox relationship. Previously, ASHA members have been guests on shows devoted to a wide range of voice-related topics, including the effects of aging on the human voice, how new voice therapy is changing the lives of singers around the world, and the relationship between singing and speaking. Podcasts of those shows are available at www.asha.org/bhsm.

"We are very excited to have this opportunity to build our relationship with VoiceBox and its listeners," ASHA President Patricia A. Prelock, PhD CCC-SLP, says. "Better Hearing and Speech Month will be a fitting time for our members to share their tremendous expertise with the public once again through the show."

According to Chloe Veltman, executive producer and host of Voicebox, "Thanks to in-depth programming with ASHA-member experts, our audience has learned so much about the ways we use and abuse our voices, why taking care of them matters, and how we can maintain vocal health and identify and address issues as they arise."

"Without ASHA," Veltman adds, "VoiceBox's landmark series on vocal health just wouldn't be possible."
