This evidence-based guideline provides recommendations for the assessment of children with global developmental delay. While these guidelines are primarily intended to provide parameters for the practice of neurology, several recommendations are relevant to audiologists as well.


  • Hearing/Balance Screening/Assessment
    • "Children with global developmental delay may undergo appropriate vision and audiometric assessment at the time of their diagnosis" (p. 376).
    • "Audiometric assessment can include behavioral audiometry or brainstem auditory evoked response testing when feasible. Early evidence from screening studies suggests that transient evoked otoacoustic emissions should offer an alternative when audiometry is not feasible" (p. 376).
