Facebook isn't just for teenagers anymore—online social networks offer great opportunities to connect with your peers and stay on top of the latest news from ASHA.
Whether you're interested in meeting other professionals in your area, making new friends, sharing photos or videos, or just want to be among the first to know what's new at ASHA, online social networks provide some great ways to connect. And best of all, all of ASHA's social networks are free!
Not sure what "social networking" means?
Online social networking involves connecting and sharing information with other people via the Internet. If you participate on ASHA's forums you have already experienced the benefits of being able to connect with your peers to share ideas and exchange information. Social networking Web sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook offer different ways to interact and can help you get the most out of your ASHA membership.
LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site that allows you to strengthen and extend your existing network of professional contacts. Becoming a member of ASHA's members-only LinkedIn group will identify you as an ASHA member and serve as proof of your credentials. With LinkedIn you can:
- Get introduced to other professionals through the people you know
- Establish your self as a subject expert
- Find potential clients
- Make yourself available for business opportunities
To learn more and sign up for your free account visit the LinkedIn Web site. Then join the ASHA group and start connecting.
Twitter is a "microblogging" service that allows family, friends, and colleagues to stay connected through short messages sent via the Internet or cell phone.
ASHA (ashaweb) uses Twitter to highlight information on the Web site like press releases, The ASHA Leader stories and other items of interest. Twitter is a great way to stay on top of what's new at ASHA, and provides a way to connect to other members who also follow ashaweb.
To learn more and to set up your free account, go to Twitter.
Facebook allows you to create a personal profile complete with photos, links, videos and other information you may want to share with friends, colleagues and former classmates. Facebook gives you the opportunity to get to know other ASHA members on a more personal level and to interact in a more casual way. ASHA's page on Facebook isn't all play, though—there are updates, event listings, videos and more. You can also become a fan of the Listen to Your Buds fan page to help spread the word about ASHA's "Tuned in Today...But Tuned Out Tomorrow?" public education campaign.
