Almost half of recently surveyed ASHA members reported lack of awareness as the leading barrier to early detection of communication disorders. The ASHA surveys team sent a Web-based survey to 7,811 members, split evenly between ASHA-certified speech-language pathologists and audiologists, and received an overall response rate of 17 percent.
With the help of findings like these [PDF], ASHA is planning a public education campaign to inform consumers and encourage them to seek help from certified SLPs and audiologists. Stay tuned to ASHA's public website for further information about the early detection campaign, and how you can serve as a media source.
Complete survey results are available on the ASHA website.
