This presentation provides a practical guide for formulating and implementing service delivery plans that meet the unique communication needs of the individual with MR/DD. A brief historical perspective highlights recommended practices for SLPs in the diagnostic process and eligibility decisions. Models of teaming and collaboration for assessment and goal selection are emphasized, including the role of families and the importance of cultural competence in assessments. Potential intervention strategies with an empirical basis are also presented. Several principles founded in the basic rights of individuals with MR/DD are presented, to be used to guide the roles and responsibilities of SLPs.
Amplification and Dead Regions in the Cochlea
Option(s):
Audio CD and Manual, Additional Manual(s)
CEUs:
0.2
Regions of the cochlea where there are no functioning inner hair cells and/or neurons, known as dead regions, have important implications for the fitting of hearing aids. Basilar membrane vibration in such regions is not transduced and does not lead to action potentials in the auditory nerve. This audio self-study describes the audiogram configurations that may be associated with dead regions and describes the application of the TEN test, which can be used to detect dead regions and to define their extent. Clinical applications of the results, including applications in fitting hearing aids, are discussed.

Auditory–Oral Intervention Strategies for Children With Cochlear Implants
Option(s):
Videotape and Manual, Additional Manual(s)
CEUs:
0.2
This video describes and demonstrates intervention strategies found to be successful in facilitating the acquisition of spoken language by children with cochlear implants. Viewers are taken systematically through the steps of the auditory skills hierarchy to demonstrate the development of auditory skills. Video clips of language-based activities illustrate how auditory tasks are designed and presented. Children ranging in age from toddler to adolescent provide an opportunity to see the varying stages of auditory development. Additionally, the mapping process and the role of the speech and hearing clinicians in providing valuable information to the cochlear implant centers is reviewed.
Bilingual Phonological Development and Disorders
Option(s):
Audio CD and Manual, Additional Manual(s)
CEUs:
0.2
The population of bilingual children in the United States continues to grow. The assessment and treatment of phonological disorders in bilingual children, especially Spanish-English bilinguals, is often difficult given the lack of information on bilingual phonological development and best practices related to clinical management. The purpose of this seminar is to provide information on Spanish and English phonology, bilingual phonological development in Spanish-English speaking children, and current approaches for least-biased assessment and intervention.
Central Auditory Processing Disorders: Assessment, Differential Diagnosis, and Treatment
Option(s):
Audio CD and Manual, Additional Manual(s)
CEUs:
0.2
Audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and other professionals have critical roles to fill in the assessment and differential diagnosis of (Central) Auditory Processing Disorders [(C)APD]. This audio self-study familiarizes participants with current perspectives on the screening, assessment, and treatment of (C)APD. Fundamental neuroscience tenets of auditory processing, and the relationship of (C)APD to language, learning, and communication difficulties, are discussed. The development and implementation of individualized, deficit-specific treatment plans is explored. Although the primary focus is on (C)APD in school-aged children, the principles discussed are also applicable to adults.
Clinical and Instrumental Evaluation of Voice Disorders (Master Clinician Series)

The increasing diversity of our population virtually guarantees that practitioners’ caseloads will include children and families from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Because of a lack of training in this area, even practitioners who value culturally competent care and authentic family participation in early intervention may struggle to implement culturally sensitive practices. This program focuses on practical models and strategies to promote change in practice at several levels, and covers assessment and intervention practices across cultures (e.g., the use of cultural mediators, dynamic assessment).
