Spoken Language Development in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders
As a group, children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are at high risk for severe delays and lifelong impairments in broad aspects of language competency. This program presents the results of four studies of aspects of spoken language development among children with ASD (ages 2–18).
You will be able to:
- discuss the perception and production of lexical stress and processing of affective prosody in adolescents with high-functioning autism
- list associations between five different types of parent verbal responsiveness and later spoken vocabulary for 32 young children with ASD
- evaluate the effects of reciprocal imitation training (RIT) for object and gesture imitation on language behavior in young children with ASD
- discuss the extent to which behavioral and physiological responses during child-directed speech (CDS) correlate with communication skills in young children with ASD
