Learn to identify the primary ototoxic agents in common clinical use, with regard to risk factors, patient considerations, primary clinical uses and drug interactions. This audio self-study gives particular consideration to platinum based chemotherapeutic agents, aminoglycoside antibiotics, and loop diuretics. Methods and alternatives for monitoring ototoxicity in both clinical and research populations are also discussed, along with a variety of testing options and patient considerations. Scheduling recommendations are reviewed for the various types of ototoxins, and the current research in otoprotective agents for drug and noise induced ototoxicity is surveyed. Some considerations of the DSHEA act, and the FDA approval process for drugs and nutraceuticals, are included.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • discuss the relative risk of ototoxic chemotherapeutic agents
  • describe the most common drug and environmental interactions that can increase or ameliorate the risk of ototoxicity
  • compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches to ototoxicity monitoring
  • compare and contrast the various otoprotective agents that have been proposed and investigated
