Narrative Assessment with Cultural Applications (On Demand Webinar)

This session will explore mechanisms for assessing narrative comprehension and production that can be practically implemented in schools, and that can be adapted to the needs of children from different backgrounds and applied to culturally relevant texts and content. Narratives provide a functional context and purpose for addressing and integrating the language components. Therefore, to develop appropriate, effective language interventions, it is essential to adequately assess child narrative skills, ensuring that the assessment is relevant to children from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Participants will learn how to view narrative assessments and adapt or select assessments for children with cultural and linguistic differences.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • Use readily available and free or inexpensive tools to assess narrative skills
  • Adapt and implement procedures for assessing narrative skills for students from various cultural backgrounds
  • Understand linguistic and conceptual elements that impact complexity of texts
  • Connect personal with fictional narratives and use personal narratives as a bridge to fictional ones
  • Apply assessment information to intervention planning
