With advances in newborn hearing screening and audiological assessment techniques, the age at which permanent childhood hearing loss is identified has dropped. Our knowledge of the best approaches to providing amplification for babies and young children, however, is still in its infancy. Hearing aid selection for young children should be evidence-based, with the goal of providing a foundation for speech and language development. Verification techniques should seek to ensure that acoustic cues important for speech and language are audible. This program emphasizes a flexible approach that takes into account the unique listening needs of children from birth to age 3.
Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:
- differentiate the listening needs of adults and children and analyze the influence of these differences on the selection of hearing aids
- utilize evidence-based techniques for hearing aid verification, including advanced hearing aid technologies when appropriate
- generate a comprehensive protocol to fit infants and young children into your clinical practice
