With the rapid emergence of new dysphagia treatments, it is more important than ever for speech-language pathologists to make principled decisions to guide best practice until sufficient evidence is available to support new procedures. This self-study reviews the current state of the clinical swallowing examination, evaluates pulse oximetry as an indicator of aspiration, examines the utility of cervical auscultation, and explores the importance of clinical examination and evaluation for children prior to instrumental assessment.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • discuss the current state of the clinical swallowing examination in adult populations
  • state the value of pulse oximetry in determining aspiration
  • explain the two forms of auscultation as they apply to swallowing
  • explain the purpose of a clinical examination in the pediatric population
