A communication disorder engenders a great deal of painful feeling in clients and their families. This audio self-study evaluates the current counseling practices of informing and persuading used by many professionals in the field. A listening/evaluating model of counseling is presented, in which client empowerment is the principle goal. Counseling practices that interfere with good communication between professional and client are described. Client emotions are enumerated and the behavioral consequences described, along with suggestions for managing behavior in a way that facilitates client growth.
