Speech-language pathologists are an integral part of any team addressing the needs of individuals with MR/DD and their families. This presentation provides a practical guide for formulating and implementing service delivery plans that meet the unique communication needs of the individual with MR/DD. A brief historical perspective highlights recommended practices for SLPs in the diagnostic process and eligibility decisions. Models of teaming and collaboration for assessment and goal selection are emphasized, including the role of families and the importance of cultural competence in assessments. Potential intervention strategies with an empirical basis are also presented. Several principles founded in the basic rights of individuals with MR/DD are presented, to be used to guide the roles and responsibilities of SLPs.
