These articles focus on speech-language services to English language learners (ELLs). They provide an overview of strategies to enhance English vocabulary instruction for ELLs. They discuss how speech-language pathologists think and talk about dialect diversity in the United States and elsewhere in order to better serve children and advocate for the field of communication disorders. This part also provides public school clinicians with strategies for preparing and conducting assessments for ELL students in their native languages. It considers speech-language pathologists who are competent in the student’s language and for those who will work with a trained interpreter in the student’s language. It explains how to prepare the interpreter to conduct an interview, a conference and/or an assessment of an ELL student.

Practical Assessment and Treatment Strategies for English Language Learners With Language Impairments
Format(s): Streaming Video
CEUs: 0.05
0.5
Many SLPs face the challenge of assessing and evaluating English language learners (ELLs) whose primary language they do not know in order to ascertain whether students are manifesting a language difference or a language impairment. There are no formal tests to administer to ELLs who speak a language such as Vietnamese, Tagalog, or Russian, but SLPs must find a way to evaluate the student in a legal, nonbiased manner. In this session, Celeste Roseberry-McKibbin provides practical tools that SLPs can use with ELLs ages 3-18 from any language background. The course also touches on intervention, specifically language of intervention and practical strategies for increasing the vocabulary skills of ELLs with language impairments.

Many bilingual children receive intervention services only in English because clinicians – whether monolingual or bilingual – cannot speak all of the non-English languages that are represented on their caseload. This webinar will provide key strategies to support children with both of their languages, even when the clinician does not speak the non-English one. The presenter will review typical language development, growth trajectories, and cross-language transfer of bilingual children and discuss emerging literature on treatment efficacy for these children.

Narratives provide a functional context and purpose for addressing and integrating the language components. Therefore, to develop appropriate, effective language interventions, it is essential to adequately assess child narrative skills, ensuring that the assessment is relevant to children from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Participants will learn how to view narrative assessments and adapt or select assessments for children with cultural and linguistic differences.

Format(s): DVD and Manual, Streaming Video
CEUs: 0.4
4.0
This session will discuss the effects of poverty on low-socioeconomic-status (SES) children and investigate whether academic underachievement is caused by language impairment, environmental factors, or a combination of both. In order to differentiate language impairment from language difference based on environmental factors, participants will learn how to get away from knowledge-based testing and conduct dynamic assessment of information processing skills. We will address the issue of building oral and literate vocabulary skills in low-SES children and discuss how to build executive functioning skills as well. Increasing academic achievement and helping students in poverty meet new Common Core State Standards in language will be emphasized.
