McCormick Place West Grand Ballroom, 375DE, Level 3
We invite you to join your colleagues at one of the highlights of the convention showcasing the excellence in our professions. The evening begins with the presentation of the Honors of the Association, ASHA's most prestigious award. The inspiring videos of those receiving the Honors give an insightful look at their lifetime achievements. The ASHA Fellows, whose contributions form the cornerstones of the professions, are also given. We will also celebrate the presentation of the ASHA Distinguished Service Award, Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs, ASHA Editors' Awards, ASHFoundation Award, and the NSSLHA Honors among others.
Senator and Mrs. Glenn will be with us in Chicago to present the "Annie," the award established in Mrs. Glenn's name many years ago. Mrs. Glenn is known as an advocate for those with communication disorders because of her own challenges with stuttering. The "Annie" is awarded to a person who best exemplifies her own unbeatable courage. This year the "Annie" will be presented to Julie Andrews.
In defining the magic of the multitalented Julie Andrews, an astute journalist made this comment: "...the lady is not just a great star; she is a whirling, dazzling constellation." Most everyone knows her fine works on Broadway, which include My Fair Lady and Camelot, and her Oscar winning role in Mary Poppins and of course her portrayal of Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music. However, you may not know that because of her writing endeavors, she now has her own publishing imprint, The Julie Andrews Collection, with her daughter and co-author. "Children's literature and the arts both represent strong passions for me, and I've spent much of my life dedicated to both of them," commented Ms. Andrews in a recent press release by Little Brown Books for Young Children.
Ms. Andrews also suffered loss of her singing voice following vocal cord surgery in 1997 and now supports research being conducted that will help restore basic voice to those afflicted with moderate to severe vocal cord scarring.
Plan now to join us for this inspiring evening and to hear a beloved and much-honored star of stage, screen, and television talk about her life's work and love of writing children's books.
