Using Written Language Assessment and Intervention to Yield Powerful Payoffs

Speech-language pathologists who work with school-age students with language and literacy disorders can become overwhelmed by the breadth, depth, and individualized nature of their students’ needs. Gaps between students’ assessed abilities and Common Core curriculum standards can seem impossibly wide. In this course, Nickola Wolf Nelson describes how to use written language curriculum-based activities to bridge those gaps. Providing written language assessment and intervention can improve written and oral language at the discourse, sentence, and sound/word levels, and the case studies presented in this course will illustrate the powerful outcomes that are possible – namely, heightened communicative competence and confidence.

After completing this session, you will be able to:

assess and describe qualitative and quantitative features of written language samples at the writing process, discourse, sentence, and sound/word levels
use techniques for scaffolding students to plan and produce more sophisticated written discourse and syntactically complex sentences
use assessment techniques and three techniques for providing direct, explicit intervention at the sound/word level
