Individuals who present with speech sound disorders may occasionally be resistant to intervention; in this case, conventional methods may be ineffective and remediation efforts may result in slow progress. In this program, we’ll present research-based and practical diagnostic and remediation methods designed to help you identify the problem, best select the targets, establish and stabilize specific sound productions, and know when to intervene. We’ll also challenge some traditional approaches, such as introducing sounds in the initial, medial, and final positions, and we will provide you with a greater understanding of speech sound production and the relationship between phonological, motor, and sensory feedback systems. Specific approaches will be provided for /r/, lateralized sibilants, /l/, elimination of glottal stop, and nasal emission substitutions.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • differentiate types of speech sound disorders
  • identify the phonological, motoric, and sensory characteristics of difficult sounds
  • describe the application of teaching and learning practices, such as response frequency, response shaping, stimuli selection, and practice
  • list the steps needed to achieve effective remediation
  • describe specific troubleshooting solutions for slow progress and skill maintenance

Group Registration Note: A group registration entitles you to one Web to this program. Any number of people may listen and earn ASHA CEUs on that connection. The person who will act as site leader for the broadcast should register on behalf of the group. After registering, the site leader will be able to download seminar instructions, handouts, and CEU materials. The site leader needs to have, or create, a login to the ASHA Web site.
