For 23 years the Frazier Rehab Institute has allowed free water to dysphagic patients. The Frazier Water Protocol raises concerns about the safety of water, absorption of water in the lungs, and pathogenic bacteria. Balancing safety, hydration, and quality of life are central to the protocol. This program presents the rationale for the Frazier Water Protocol, along with supporting literature that includes aspiration pneumonia risk factors, as well as dehydration risks and consequences. A review of literature on compliance with health care recommendations is also presented. The water protocol guidelines as practiced at Frazier Rehab Institute are covered in depth, and variations on the protocol are explored.
