The increasing diversity of our population virtually guarantees that practitioners’ caseloads will include children and families from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Because of a lack of training in this area, even practitioners who value culturally competent care and authentic family participation in early intervention may struggle to implement culturally sensitive practices. This program focuses on practical models and strategies to promote change in practice at several levels, and covers assessment and intervention practices across cultures (e.g., the use of cultural mediators, dynamic assessment).

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • discuss family perspectives and concerns about early intervention practices (0-8 years)
  • explore ways to collaborate with families as agents for change in practice
  • implement specific strategies to improve services for all children and families, with emphasis on cross-cultural service delivery
  • locate additional resources to address this issue at all levels of professional development and practice
