Securing funding for AAC devices can be difficult. This presentation reviews the current status of funding for SGDs in our health care system. Key concepts and principles that support coverage and related SGD access are addressed, including the SLP’s role in determining eligibility and availability for funding through Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, Tricare, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Key vocabulary, history, resources and web pages relating to SGD are addressed.
Learning Outcomes You will be able to:
- describe the four areas that determine funding for SGDs
- examine how SGDs can serve as specific treatment across five broad communication impairment areas
- demonstrate how SLPs participate in the funding process for SGDs
