The faculty, staff, and students of the newly accredited Speech-Language Pathology program at Misericordia University in Dallas, PA went all out in May 2008 to celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month.
Early in May, undergraduate and graduate students, under the direct guidance of a licensed Audiologist and faculty member and their Clinical Director, participated in the first annual Senior Expo at a local Nursing home. Students administered hearing screenings and presented information on Communication and the Aging to senior citizens. Undergraduate students were paired with graduate students who were familiar with administering hearing screenings to conduct the examinations. Through this experience, students gained valuable experience while performing a wonderful service for the community. A total of 41 individuals were screened. Of those individuals who had their hearing tested, 23 were advised to consult with an audiologist for more comprehensive testing.
Later in May, graduate students conducted preschool speech and language screenings at Adventures and Learning Preschool located on Misericordia University's campus. Approximately 20 children were screened, and of those tested, 7 were referred for further evaluation. Immediately following the screenings, parents were notified of the results and the children were scheduled for more thorough evaluations in Misericordia University's Speech-Language and Hearing Center.
In addition, the Speech-Language Pathology Department held a coloring contest for children in the preschool, those who attend the Speech, Language and Hearing Center, and for the children of Misericordia University employees. Three first place prizes and several honorable mentions were awarded to children in the age groups of: 3-4, 5-7, and 8-10. First place winners received gift certificates to a local arts and crafts store. Honorable mention winners received coloring books and crayons. All winners received certificates for their entries.
Misericordia University is proud of its efforts to support and recognize BHSM 2008.
