ASHA 2005 State Education Advocacy Leaders

ASHA identified a number of priorities for 1999. ASHA's Priority 1 for 1999 stated that 95% of the ASHA school-based members are confronted with forces such as limited financing of education programs; federal, state, and local education reforms, and demand for accountability measures that affect their ability to provide quality services. Among the strategies developed to address this priority is Strategy 12, which calls for the establishment and promotion of a national network of state associations' school contacts, which are now known as State Education Advocacy Leaders (SEALs). State speech-language-hearing associations have identified a SEAL to serve as an advocate to implement the IDEA in his/her state plan.

The mission of the SEALs network is to enhance and perpetuate the advocacy, leadership, clinical, management skills of school-based ASHA members at the state level to influence administrative and public policy decisions that impact the delivery of speech-language pathology and audiology in school settings.
