Wyoming State Characteristics of Licensure Law

Initial Licensure Requirement

  1. At least a Master's degree; effective July 1, 2012 audiology applicants must possess a doctoral degree
  2. Supervised clinical practicum of 375 hours
  3. Thirty-six weeks of full-time postgraduate supervised clinical fellowship
  4. Passage of an ETS exam
    or
    Qualifications shall be equivalent to current requirements for the ASHA CCC's

Exemptions

  1. Physicians, surgeons or their supervisees who conduct hearing testing
  2. Hearing aid dealer
  3. Certified individuals performing services solely in the public schools or the Department of Health programs for the developmentally disabled
  4. Students appropriately titled as interns or trainees
  5. Clinical fellows
  6. Unlicensed persons who meet state licensure requirements may provide services for no more than 5 days per calendar year in cooperation with a state-licensed speech-language pathologist or audiologist.
  7. Persons licensed in another state may provide services for no more than 30 days per calendar year in cooperation with a state-licensed speech-language pathologist or audiologist.

Reciprocity/Endorsement

  1. Persons licensed in other states with equivalent standards may have the exam waived and licensure granted.
  2. The board may waive the exam and grant a license to any person certified as clinically competent by a nationally recognized association for speech and hearing.

Interim Practice/Temporary Licensure

Persons completing all requirements for licensure except the clinical experience may obtain a provisional license.

Continuing Education for Licensure Renewal

Requires 12 contact hours per year

Hearing Aid Dispensing

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under their license.

Support Personnel

  1. Licensees supervising a speech-language pathology assistant or audiometric technician and each assistant or technician shall register with the Board.
  2. Speech-language pathology assistants and audiometric technicians must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, have good moral character, have communication skills adequate for the tasks assigned, and the ability to relate to the clinical population being served.
  3. A training course taught by a Wyoming licensed speech language pathologist or audiologists in the case of audiometric technicians, shall be completed; a practicum and/or on-the-job training is required; annual training to maintain proficiency in clinical management procedures must be conducted of at least an hour in each area of initial training; a report must be submitted to the board following training.
  4. Assistant and technician clinical activities are 100% the responsibility of the licensee.
  5. Direct on-site observation of the assistant and technician are required: first 10 hours of direct client contact following training; 10% of all clinical sessions after the first 10 hours to include 1 in every 10 consecutive clinical sessions.
  6. Licensees may not supervise more than 3 assistants/technicians except under certain board-approved circumstances.

Board Composition

The Board shall comprise five members appointed by the Governor; Board members shall be residents of the state for at least 1 year prior to appointment and shall have been practicing for at least 5 years prior to appointment; there shall be one licensed audiologist, two licensed speech-language pathologists, one consumer member, and one licensed physician, surgeon, or dentist.

Telepractice

The provision of speech pathology or audiology services in this state, through telephonic, electronic or other means, regardless of the location of the speech pathologists or audiologists, shall constitute the practice of speech pathology or audiology and shall require licensure as provided in this chapter.
