Wyoming Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Audiologist

  • Master's degree in audiology from a regionally or nationally accredited institution
    or
  • State Licensure

Continuing Education Requirement

Individuals with authorization from the Professional Teachers Standards Board (PTSB) must complete 5 semester hours of university or PTSB-approved workshop credit every 5 years. Individuals with state licensure must complete 20 clock hours each year.

Emergency Certification

The Exception Authorization requires a bachelor's degree and enrollment in a master's degree program for speech-language pathology or audiology. The applicant must provide a letter from the school superintendent stating the following: no fully-licensed and qualified individual was available for the position; a fully licensed educator will supervise the applicant; a district supervisor will formally evaluate the applicant no less than two times during the school year; and the applicant will complete additional requirement as necessary. The authorization is valid for one year and may be renewed one additional year if the applicant demonstrates progress towards full licensure.

Support Personnel

Paraprofessionals/assistants are used in public schools to assist speech-language pathologists but are not required to be licensed by the PTSB but must meet Department of Education requirements. Paraprofessionals must be highly qualified and are encouraged to continue to upgrade their education on an ongoing basis. Paraprofessionals may provide services up to their capabilities as determined by their supervisors.
