Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist
This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Please be advised that regulations and policy may change at any time, so always check with your state department of education for the most up-to-date information.
Audiologist
School Audiologist (Initial license is valid 7 years)
- The candidate shall have completed all course work (except special project or thesis) for a master's degree from an ASHA-accredited program with a major in audiology. Such program shall include satisfactory completion of a written comprehensive examination or verification from ASHA of a passing score on the NTE as a condition for certification.
- The candidate shall provide verification of successful completion of one of the following:
a. Program—Candidate trained out-of-state may present verification of a state-approved certification in the role of a school audiologist; b. Experience—three years of experience; c. Course—thirty clock hours or three quarter hours (two semester hours) of course work approved by the professional educator standards board which includes specified outcomes related to knowledge of laws and policies, resources, collaboration with team members, and student support.
Educational Staff Associate—School Audiologist (Continuing)
- Master's degree in audiology from an ASHA-accredited college or university program
- Documentation of at least 180 days of full-time (or equivalent) employment in the respective role with an authorized employer (i.e., school district, educational service district, state agency, college or university) and at least 30 days of employment with the same employer
- Passage of a written, comprehensive exam in the field of specialization
- Completion of course covering issues of abuse
Continuing Education Requirement
Once an individual has obtained a continuing certificate, he or she is required to complete the continuing education requirement of 150 clock hours of approved in-service or 15 quarter hours (10 semester hours) of college coursework (or a combination of both) every five years.
Emergency Certification
Limited educational staff associate certificates are currently issued only to school speech-language pathologists or audiologists or school nurses. Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree in speech-language pathology or audiology. In addition, the ESD or local school district superintendent or approved private school administrator must verify: (1) that the applicant meets requirements; (2) the individual is being certificated for a limited assignment; and (3) the district/superintendent/administrator indicates the basis on which he/she has determined that the individual is competent for the assignment.
This conditional certificate may be reissued once for two years if enrolled in a master's degree program which will lead to initial ESA certification and upon completion of 60 clock hours of course work since the issuance of the most recent certificate.
