School-based speech-language pathology assistants must complete at least 21 credits (seven courses) with 15 credits being academically-based and six credits concentrating on clinical practice. As part of the clinically based courses, students will gain 25 hours of observation of an ASHA certified school-based speech-language pathologist. In addition, 100 hours of clinical practice under the supervision of a speech language pathologist will be earned. Throughout the year-long program, students will compile documents to be included in a portfolio that demonstrate their learning and understanding of the role of the speech-language pathology assistant in schools, which is graded on a pass/fail basis. Coursework and practicum experiences follow guidelines set forth by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) for the training, use and supervision of speech-language pathology assistants.
