The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has announced the opportunity for state education agencies to submit applications to receive funding awards for the 2009 Striving Readers program. The deadline for filing a notice of intent to apply is July 1, 2009, with final applications due August 10, 2009.
The Striving Readers program is intended to raise the literacy levels of adolescent students (middle and high school who attend schools eligible for assistance under Title I, of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and to assist schools in enrolling a significant number of students reading below grade level. The program strives to build a strong, scientific research base for identifying and replicating strategies that improve adolescent literacy instruction. More information on the Striving Readers program can be found on the ED Web site.
According to ED, state education agencies can submit applications on behalf of themselves and also on behalf of one or more local education agency. For more information, please contact Catherine D.
